He says “and certainly you can’t start car in third”
Hold on.
I used to be good friends with this Turkish girl when I lived in Texas. I drove from Corpus to San Antonio to visit her one day. Since she grew up driving manuals and I didn’t she always gave me shit about my driving. I had just picked her up and she was as per usual mocking my diving based on an earlier time. She says, “you cannot drive well you try to start the car in the third gear.” At that point I came to a stop, put it in third, and pulled away. She wasn’t amused.

I’ve started a V6 Ram in 4th. Not hard to do. Starting the FiST even in second is nearly impossible though.

First time I drove a manual I nearly managed to pull off a start on a small incline in 3rd on a base model fiesta.

Well, she was giving me shit cause when I first got the car I was seeing if I could make it move in other gears besides 1st, and she was referencing that.

One of the first times I drove manual for an extended time I did a hill start in third in a 06 Mustang GT. Doug’s comment more reminded me of what that girl said.

Well the Viper has a 3rd gear lockout that unless the engine is at a certain speed it will not allow you to put the car in 3rd so in this case Douglas is correct.

Did not know that, it more reminded me of what that girl said to me.

Interesting. The first time I drove a manual it was in a base model Fiesta and I almost managed to start on a small incline in 3rd (it probably would have worked on flat ground, I actually had it moving but not fast enough that I could get the clutch all the way out). I wonder what makes the ST so hard to start in higher gears.

Like I’ve said to others, it wasn’t that you can’t do it, it was more it reminded me of what that girl said to me.

Can’t be as bad as an idling NA 4 Cylinder (the theme of the day was clutch control so I was starting with 0 throttle, and the goal was to not fry it since I wasn’t technically supposed to be driving the car).

When I was learning stick, I kept stalling and stalling and stalling. Couldn’t figure it out. As it turned out, I kept trying to start in 3rd gear and I could eventually do it since I thought it was first. I was like, “wow this is kinda harder than I thought.” After that 1st gear was cake.

It starts bogging below 2k rpm.

I’ve started in 25th gear... in a tractor with 16 reverse speeds and 32 forward ones. What do I win?!

I can verify this. I did it in my C5Z.
Also, that car would idle in second gear at about 30 mph...

Same as on ‘Vettes, the Tremacs have the “skip-shift” integrated. It’s an emissions thing. Easy, and worth it, to bypass this.
